Turning prefabrication into real renovation
Haas Fertigbau is an Austrian leading company that designs and manufactures prefabricated houses, agricultural buildings, warehouses, workshops, and hybrid timber-concrete structures, combining high-quality craftsmanship with advanced production technologies.
Within DigiFab, the company is responsible for manufacturing and installing the serial renovation modules for the Austrian demonstrator.
Working alongside AEE INTEC, Towern 3000, Rottenmanner Siedlungsgenossenschaft and KU Leuven, the company contributes to transforming digital renovation concepts into real building components that can be produced off-site and assembled efficiently on-site.
This close collaboration allows digital planning, industrial manufacturing and installation activities to work as one integrated process, one of the core objectives of DigiFab.
Collaboration across different perspectives
For the Haas Fertigbau team, one of the project’s greatest strengths is the diversity of expertise brought together by the consortium.
Researchers, manufacturers, technology providers, building owners and customers all contribute different perspectives to the same renovation process. While this multidisciplinary approach creates valuable opportunities for innovation, it also represents one of the project’s biggest challenges.
Different stakeholders often have different priorities, technical languages and ways of working. DigiFab creates the environment where these perspectives can converge into practical, scalable renovation solutions.
A new model for sustainable renovation
Austria has a large number of existing buildings that remain structurally sound but no longer meet today’s energy performance requirements.
Haas Fertigbau believes that industrialised prefabrication can significantly accelerate their renovation without generating unnecessary waste or causing major disruption for occupants.
The prefabricated timber modules developed within DigiFab are designed not only to improve the thermal performance of buildings, but also to integrate modern technologies for cooling and renewable energy generation. This approach helps existing buildings respond to the growing challenges posed by climate change while extending their lifespan in a resource-efficient way.
Beyond the Austrian demonstrator, the solutions developed through DigiFab could provide a scalable model for serial renovation across Europe, supporting faster deployment of high-quality, low-carbon building upgrades.
