Behind DigiFab: Burgos University Driving Digital Innovation in Manufacturing

The University of Burgos (UBU) is a multidisciplinary Spanish university recognised for its work in digital innovation and advanced manufacturing. By combining academic research with applied industrial collaboration, UBU develops technological solutions that connect industry, sustainability, and digital transformation.

Supporting DigiFab with Digitalisation Expertise

Within DigiFab, UBU contributes its technical expertise in digitalisation and advanced manufacturing processes. The team plays an active role in the development of demonstrator use cases, ensuring that the project’s digital solutions respond to real industrial needs.

Working closely with other consortium partners, UBU supports several key activities: analysing technical requirements, testing and validating digital tools, and assessing their practical applicability for industry.

The university is also strongly involved in stakeholder engagement, helping connect local industrial players with the DigiFab ecosystem. By involving companies, practitioners, and regional actors, UBU ensures that project results remain grounded in real-world challenges and opportunities.

Bridging Technology and Industry

For the UBU team, what makes DigiFab particularly compelling is its integrative approach to innovation. Rather than focusing solely on technological development, the project aims to build a collaborative ecosystem where knowledge sharing, training, and cooperation between stakeholders play a central role.

At the same time, this ambition presents an important challenge: bringing together diverse perspectives from high-tech developers, research institutions, and traditional industry players. Aligning these viewpoints is essential to ensure that the solutions developed within DigiFab remain both practical and scalable.

One of the most distinctive aspects of the project is its focus on making digital fabrication technologies accessible to smaller organisations, helping SMEs engage with Industry 4.0 technologies that are often difficult to adopt due to cost or complexity.

Strengthening Digital Transformation in Spain

In Spain, DigiFab can help reduce the digital gap between large companies and SMEs, enabling smaller firms to modernise their production processes without facing prohibitive investment barriers.

By supporting the adoption of technologies such as additive manufacturing, robotics, and advanced simulation, the project can strengthen productivity and competitiveness across Spanish industrial value chains.

At the same time, DigiFab promotes more sustainable manufacturing practices, optimising resource use and supporting more circular approaches to production while contributing to national digital transformation goals.

“DigiFab is more than a research project—it is a platform where innovation meets industry, ensuring that digital transformation benefits organizations of every size. By participating, we bring our national expertise into a European framework that amplifies impact and creates long-term opportunities.”
